Mindfulness Movement

Here at Western Hills, we value emotional education just as much as academic instruction. Thanks to the Zen Kids TEF grant, our counselor has been able to teach our students how to identify their emotions and regulate their body through the use of meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and breathing techniques. Now, our teachers are joining the "Mindfulness Movement" and will be incorporating mindfulness activities in to their classroom instruction. Mrs. Cook Receives KCEN TV's Outstanding Educator of the Month Award

On Wednesday, Mrs. Cook thought she was going to the 3rd grade musical to introduce the program. In actuality, she was surprised with KCEN TV news anchors waiting to present her with the Outstanding Educator of the Month Award. She was surprised and honored to receive the award. Big Blue Wave

The 2018 Big Blue Wave is coming soon! Join us on Friday, January 26 at Thornton Elementary School for this year's 5K/1K Glow Run. Registration is open. Register at www.runsignup.com/bigbluewave. Prices go up December 17! If you register by January 18 you get this year's awesome dry-fit t-shirt and cool glow stuff to wear during the race! Zen Kids

Our counselor wrote and received an Innovative Teaching Grant from Temple Education Foundation (TEF). The grant helped us purchase a class set of yoga mats and instructional supplies to implement the program efficiently. During Zen Kids Sessions, the students learn mindfulness and guided meditation techniques, deep breathing exercises, and yoga poses. The goal of the program is to teach students how to regulate their bodies and appropriately respond to overwhelming emotions.

Western Hills Gives Back! Check out KWKT FOX 44 and KWTX News 10 tonight for a story about our Coin Collection Fundraiser to benefit Royalwood Elementary in Sheldon ISD. Together, we raised $500 to give to Royalwood Elementary to help re-furbish their library after it was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey.

Red Ribbon Week is October 23-27

WHES will observe the following theme days during Red Ribbon Week:
* Monday October 23rd: “Rock the Red!” Wear red and/or rock star attire.
* Tuesday October 24th: “Team Up Against Drugs!” Wear your favorite team shirt/jersey.
* Wednesday October 25th: “Real Heroes Don’t Do Drugs!” Wear super hero attire.
* Thursday October 26th: “Round up Drugs!” Wear cowboy/cowgirl/western attire.
* Friday October 27th: “Spirit Day: Blue Front White Back Magic” Wear Wildcat Blue to support your hometown Temple Wildcats!
* Tuesday October 31st, we will allow students and staff to wear Halloween costumes to school. Please remember, no face paint or masks.

Spare Change Drive to Benefit Royalwood Elementary

We are initiating a spare change coin drive challenge to benefit the library of Royalwood Elementary School in Sheldon ISD, which was decimated by Hurricane Harvey. The coin challenge will begin on Wednesday October 11th and run through the completion of the Book Fair on October 28th. The classroom that collects the most money will receive a Pinata Party! Together we can make a difference and help our adopted school rebuild.
