“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!” The fourth graders at Western Hills are taking their opportunity this holiday season to not only celebrate one another, but celebrate important people in their lives. We are counting down the 12 days of Christmas doing various acts of kindness. Kindness is a gift that should be given year-round.

Members of the garden club discovered some interesting mushrooms that sprouted up after all of the recent rain. Also, we are still documenting the progress of the 3rd grade student's cabbages that they will enter in the Bonnie Plants 3rd grade cabbage contest in December.

1st grade students performed their annual Thanksgiving musical on Tuesday November 15th. As always, music teacher Melody Knott did a fabulous job directing the students.

We will hold our 2nd Six Weeks Rocking Roadrunner Awards this Friday November 11th. This is also Veteran's Day and we will pay tribute to our Veterans during the opening awards ceremony. Please dress your children in red, white, and blue or camouflage to honor our Veterans. The schedule for awards follows: 4th & 5th grade: 7:55-8:25 a.m. 2nd & 3rd grade: 8:40-9:10 a.m. Kinder & 1st grade: 9:25-9:55 a.m.

Join us for a fall festival on Saturday October 29th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the bus parking lot at the school. Wear your costume, enjoy free games and prizes, courtesy of the Western Hills Church of Christ. PTO will sell concession items and host a costume contest for teachers and students, as well as a pumpkin painting contest. We will also have hay rides and a photo booth. Come on out for an afternoon of fall fun!

WHES was honored to receive the Superintendent's Attendance Award for having the highest rate of teacher attendance for the 1st six weeks, 99.23%. We also came in 2nd place in the district for the 1st six week's student attendance rate, 97.38%.

Be sure to check out the drive-through flu vaccine clinic at McLane Children's Hospital Campus in Temple this Saturday October 15th from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Please join us as we give back to our adopted military unit, the 62nd Quartermaster Company, a.k.a. "Cadence Crew" We will be collecting items and assembling care packages to send to our soldiers while they are deployed overseas. Items can be dropped off in the library from October 11th through October 28th.
